Well now when I decide I'm going to do something or learn something new I dive in head first and just do it. I've realized that 1) I need to know more about my watercolors and 2) I need to figure out how to paint realistic glass and reflections. So more little studies. thanks to the good folks over at WetCanvas.com for uploading such fabulous reference photos.

I have a long way to go in this area. There are things I like in each one and things that went wrong. Mostly I can say it's a bit tedious doing it in water color where you have to leave the white of the paper and paint in all the little dark bits separately. I will probably try some of these again in acrylic and see what that looks like.
Yes watercolors have a learning curve, but it looks like you are doing a great job! Love the way you rendered the glass bowl! Happy PPF! :-)
ReplyDeleteI need a whole lot of instruction and practice still but your glass in the bottom one with the lemon really is glassy looking! The grapes on the top one could be a little more translucent but still a great job. I have been downloading some videos pretty cheap from a place called mindbites.com also jerrysartarama.com has a lot of free videos. I'm spending way too much time on the computer though! :) Happy PPF!
ReplyDeleteYou have managed the glass really well, it is always so difficult. Love both pics! Valerie
ReplyDeleteLove your crystal bowl...fantstic! :-)
ReplyDeleteYour experiments are beautiful! I've heard Alisa Burke is having a watercolor on-line workshop. You might want to take a look. :)
ReplyDeleteoh wow!!! that crystal detail in your paintings is amazing Mary!!! gorgeous work!!!
ReplyDeleteHappy PPF!!!!!!!!!!
love your work and I do love still life.
ReplyDeleteYou've captured the crystal beautifully.
ReplyDeleteKat :-)
This is great. I am not brave enough to even attempt glass. My hat is off to you for deciding to learn and jumping in.
ReplyDeleteMy first thought before I read your post was how real the glass looked. I think you've recreated the crystal very realistically!
ReplyDeleteI like your strategy!!!
ReplyDeleteyou did a wonderful job!
I love the reflections and shadows from the crystal- beautiful!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful reflections and shadows, so soft and gentle. Annette
ReplyDeleteLoving both works, adore the detail in the reflections. Been on Wet Canvas before, I should drop by soon and learn some things, maybe learn a lot....hehe!
ReplyDeleteHave a good weekend.

Well, as someone who has never had the nerve to try painting glass (although I've taken photos of great sunlight and glass shots I intend to paint) I think these are brilliant - You seem to be doing pretty well at both watercolour and capturing the effect of glass from where I'm looking!!
ReplyDeleteLOVE the shadows in the one with the crystal and lemon. Just love it! Love Wetcanvas, too. I just finished sketching Joey the monkey from today's WDE over there. :)
ReplyDeleteI think you are doing a great job!!! They are lovely!
ReplyDeleteI think these are wonderful - glass is VERy hard to capture - you are on your way! i love the top one!
ReplyDeletehave a great weekend.
The result of your exprimentos is very good ...Saludos
ReplyDeleteTo all of you Thank You! I'm finding mostly, it's tedious to do it in water color. Might be easier in acrylic; might try that next. In the meantime I have a pet portrait commission and my regular job is really cutting into my time! I may not get to everyone at PPF this week, so sorry if I don't make it to yours, just know I am thinking of you all!
ReplyDeleteYou are doing an amazing job with your experiments. I notice you use hot press paper. I have never tried that, I use cold press. I'll have to give it a try and see the difference.
ReplyDeleteWonderful & looks like successful experiment, well done :)
ReplyDeleteThank you Marlene & Shunshine; @ Marlene, hotpress has a nice smooth surface, totally different animal than CP. the Arches is sized internally and on the surface. It won't take big sopping wet washes very well, but I tend not to do those anyway.
ReplyDeleteFantastic work! Crystal and its reflection / shadow is one painting subject I want to overcome ... eventually. You did a great job with yours. :)

ReplyDeleteBeautiful work. I really loved the crystal and lemon. The intricate painting leaving the white is brillant. Thanks for leaving such nice commens on my birds nest painting. Till next week at PPF, take care, gerri
ReplyDeleteHybrid J, Magia, Lynette, Gerri, Thank you!
ReplyDeleteWonderful job! I have never tried to paint glass as it looks really difficult. Will have to give it a try one day. Thanks for the link.
ReplyDeleteWow..these are both fabulous...gorgeous..and I love the lemon..very inspiring and stimulating..wonderful pieces!
